World champion Lyles to take 'victory lap' in Eugene, Oregon
  + stars: | 2023-09-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Lyles earlier this month said he was ending his season after becoming the first male athlete since Jamaican Usain Bolt to win gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. "Every meet that happens after world championships I see almost as a victory lap," Lyles told reporters ahead of the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League final, where he will compete in the 100m on Saturday. "A lot of people will get tired and they don't really want to go to track meets and I'm like, it doesn't matter if you win or lose now because you already won world championships. "We've got to treat this like our victory parade, like when other teams go back to their city and they celebrate. The Prefontaine Classic runs Sept. 16-17 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Dominican Republic's Paulino claims 400m gold
  + stars: | 2023-08-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
BUDAPEST, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic won World Championship gold in the women’s 400m on Wednesday, finally claiming top spot on the podium after silvers at last year’s worlds and Tokyo Olympics. The race was wide open in the absence of injured American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the 400m hurdles world record holder and fastest in the world this year over the flat, and with Olympic and defending world champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo going out in the heats four months after having a baby. Paulino, second-fastest this year, was out in lane seven and ran a controlled race to come off the final bend in the lead and drive home for an emphatic victory in 48.76 seconds. Poland's Natalia Kaczmarek took silver in 49.57 followed by Sada Williams of Barbados in 49.60. Reporting by Mitch Phillips, editing by Ed OsmondOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Paulino, second-fastest in the world this year, knew she would never get a better chance to become the first Dominican female world champion and did not waste it. Paulino was out in lane seven and ran a controlled race to surge ahead at the top of the home straight and drive home for an emphatic victory in a national record 48.76 seconds. "This national record means a lot to me. That is first world championships medal for Poland over 400m. It is still difficult to believe that this silver medal is mine."

The Portuguese federation announced his withdrawal on Thursday, noting the nagging injury had sidelined him from several events this season including the domestic championships. The 30-year-old Pichardo is the latest reigning champion to pull out of the global showcase event that begins on Saturday. United States 400 metres hurdles Olympic champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone said last week that she would miss the worlds due to a "minor knee issue."

Norman produced a memorable performance to triumph in Eugene last year after a succession of career disappointments, including a shock fifth-place finish in the Tokyo Olympic final. "Unfortunately I will not be defending my title at the 2023 World champs," Norman said in an Instagram post. Norman had scarcely competed this year and withdrew from the LA Grand Prix in May after finishing eighth in the 200m at the Doha Diamond League meet. McLaughlin-Levrone, who broke her own world record to win the 400m hurdles last year, had been expected to compete in the flat event. Bol breaks long-standing world indoor 400m record
  + stars: | 2023-02-19 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: 1 min
Feb 19 (Reuters) - Netherlands' Femke Bol ran the 400 metres in 49.26 seconds at the Dutch Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn on Sunday to break one of the longest-standing world records in track and field. Bol's time beat the previous record of 49.59 set by Czech athlete Jarmila Kratochvilova on March 7, 1982. When I crossed the line I knew that the record was mine because of the noise that the crowd made." The outdoor 400m world record is 47.60, which was set by German Marita Koch in 1985.
